We were recommended this hotel as our base for a wedding on the island!

On first views the hotel looks great, with eye catching decor!

The reception staff were great, falling over themselves to help us (even lent us the all important phone charger which I had left at gatwick!)

The room was nicely decorated and a lovely huge bed.

All I would expect for the price (the reduced rate price)

However , breakfast on the first morning was an eye opener. For a 4 star hotel I do not expect to find one of the tables in the middle of the dining room to be the store for cleaning products. This also seemed to be the table all the empty plates were cleared to - before then being taken to the kitchen! Would have expected this to be out of view.
The waiting staff were polite but got a couple of things wrong with our order and a couple of them could have smiled a bit! - it wasn't that early in the morning. The next morning. We went for breakfast in bed which was good and correct (can't go wrong. With a Ricky box order form) and bang on time!

The duke of Richmond is a nice hotel, excellent... Not really. Very good... Not quite ... Average... Yes.

Just returned from 2 nights at the Duke of Richmond where we celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. I paid for an upgraded room and got room 114 which was very dark, had a view of some noisy air con units, a sofa squashed in the corner and a bathroom in which you could only just shut the door as the toilet was in the way. In fact it was so small that there was barely room for a toilet roll holder which I couldn't find at first! Also we only had one largish towel - the other one wouldn't even go round me and I'm only small! Luckily the bath robes were huge and could be used instead!

The staff are mainly Romanian and were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast on the first day was lovely, in the sun on the terrace with wonderful scrambled egg and lots of smoked salmon. Not so good on the second day though. Waited ages to get served. The full English lacked some of the ingredients from the day before and the poached eggs were like rubber bullets. In fact I have never been served such bad poached eggs ever. My husband said that the scrambled egg was not a patch on the day before either.

So mixed feelings. I really wanted to love it. The restaurant was lovely on Friday night. The presentation was excellent and the food was tasty. The pool area looked beautiful. Parking was an issue but the staff helped us out on Saturday and we managed to get one of the spaces overnight in the small car park. The stay wasn't cheap. Almost £500 including the evening meal and not really good value for money given the size and location of the room. Nearly booked the Old Government House and wish I had.

As we booked late we had to have a standard room, so no view unfortunately. The room, although very compact, seemed to have been very recently refurbished so everything was pristine, especially the bathroom. The decor may not be to everyone's taste, particularly if you like modern design, but it fitted perfectly into the overall look of the hotel. Usually we try to eat at different places each night but the first time was so good we decided to eat here again a second time, and couldn't find any fault with the quality of food or the service. The breakfasts were also excellent, especially the fish dishes. All the staff we spoke to were friendly and helpful. The only two downsides were the car parking (only five spaces) and the problem at breakfast time when the hotel is busy. We had a notice delivered saying that as the hotel was almost full we should avoid the 9-10am period. Being well organised, we turned up at 8.30am to find that everyone else had had a similar idea!! We sat for 20 minutes waiting for a table along with a dozen others, and of course from 9.15am onwards the restaurant was two thirds empty!! Quite an own goal. However, our overall stay was very comfortable and relaxing, and we would definitely return if we visited Guernsey again.

Lovely hotel but a bit further away from the harbour than advertised & the road is much steeper than advertised so be careful before booking. We booked this for our 20th anniversary so although it was expensive, we decided to splash out. In the first room we had, neither the heating nor the towel rail worked & as it had been raining all day & we were soaked, we needed to get our clothes dry. We reported this & they sent a very young arrogant male to deal with us (feedback has been given about him to management). As they could not promise repairs, reception upgraded us which was very nice as we had not caused a fuss. Breakfast was average at best & you had to order hot food & tea & coffee so you only received a set amount. Having said that, the waiting staff were great at breakfast and dinner. There was a strange occurance the first morning. We ordered 2 full breakfasts, one without blackpudding & one without tomato when they arrived, the blackpudding & tomato were on the same plate. We repeated our order & the lovely waitress took the plates away. Where I was sitting you could see the serving counter through the mirror & the chef argued about whether he had the order wrong, then picked up the blackpudding with his bare hands & flung it onto the other plate, leaving it standing at an angle, propped up against other food. Whilst I am not surprised they did this, I find it odd in a hotel of that stature that they did it in full view of everyone & didn't place the blackpudding properly on the plate to at least appear as if they cared. Other people had problems with breakfast, receiving food exactly the same as the dish they had sent back. The waiters & waitresses tried hard but there is little they can do if kitchen staff care so little.

We stayed here for a few days to celebrate our 46th wedding anniversary. We chose this hotel because it is in the same Red Carnation group as the 4* hotel we stay at when we are in London. What an excellent choice we made. The staff were very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. They certainly lived up to their Motto – ‘No request is too large, no detail too small’. The food was very good with a varied menu and generous portions. Would suggest you try the Cheesecake if you want a special desert. The rack of lamb was excellent as was the fillet steak. It is in a good location with a 15 minute stroll into town especially if you go via the Candie Gardens. We were so impressed with the hotel that we are thinking of returning later in the year for a longer break.

Had a lovely ten day stay here on a Bed and Breakfast deal. Breakfasts were excellent with a varied choice. Dining Room staff were exceptionally friendly as were all the staff.
We ate a few evening meals in the Leopard Restaurant. A bit pricey but excellent food and so well served.

We had a lovely furnished bedroom but a bit on the small side for a ten day stay. We appreciated the tea and coffee making facilities.

We had a pleasant walk to the town (where we connected with buses and ferries, ) through Candie gardens. Bit of a steep climb back!

We only stayed one night as a stopover for Sark, but very pleased we chose this hotel
Very French styled which was nice, most comfortable bed and clean modern en suite.
Would have been happier if I could have opened the wi Dow a little further, but I think all hotels these days assume you can't be trusted with a window that opens!!
First rate breakfast with a hassle free check out..perfect

I hosted a corporate event on 11/6 and couldn't have had more help and support from Hilario and his Team. They ensured the day was seamless and I very much appreciate their support. Kamal on the day was fantastic. Equally the hotel accommodation, services and facilities were great. Many thanks!

We stayed here to celebrate hubby's birthday over the late May bank holiday weekend. We were given a lovely sea view room. Loved how it was furnished and the little quirks. Bathroom was great - fantastic power shower - and a really comfy bed. All spotlessly clean. We had a lovely little birthday cake put in the room as a surprise which was yummy. The breakfasts were really lovely - loved the haddock and poached egg or the kippers. Lovely choices. We ate in the restaurant one night and really enjoyed our food. Service was great. I love the location of the hotel by Candie Gardens and Cambridge Park. It's quite a walk back up hill from the town but we enjoyed the work out! Lovely cutting through Candie Gardens too to get to and from hotel if you like. (Nice little tea rooms in the Gardens - great cheese on toast!) Bus stop is just down the road. Would definitely return to this Hotel.

A group of 14 friends all arrived from Shropshire/Hereford to stay for the weekend. A lively bunch determined to have fun. And fun they had the service at the hotel was superb nothing was too much trouble and the staff were attentive to just the perfect degree. They each had a sense of humor too - something often so lacking in many smart places!
It is not easy to please everyone but I think you cracked this one - the weather meant they could enjoy the terrace and pool too. So thank you to th lovely staff for helping my friends to feel so welcome.

This was our fourth visit to The Duke of Richmond and it's just as lovely as ever. The 'literally' bit of this review title refers to the exotic nature of the bedroom furnishing. This time our room was black and white: a heavily patterned wallpaper, black chandelier and crystal chest of drawers, table and lots of ornamented mirrors. The first impression was a bit Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen or tart's boudoir but actually one got used to it and it was super clean, light and comfortable. The breakfast is wonderful. People don't seem to eat the homemade Bircher muesli as rapidly as they might but it's highly recommended and one can put nuts, seeds, dried or fresh fruit on it as well. The scrambled egg and smoked salmon comes with enough smoked salmon to feed a small family and the only drawback of the traditional English from our point of view is no black pudding. Not sure why they give you so little coffee in your individual pot but there's no problem about filling up. We only ate in the Leopard restaurant on our first night, a Monday, and there did seem to be a few issues such as being kept waiting rather a long time in the bar with the menus and only being shown the Specials Board after someone came to take our order. Another couple who took themselves through to the restaurant without waiting to be seated were hauled back into the bar even though the restaurant was by no means full. However, the bar is comfortable and dishes of nuts, popcorn and wasabi peas are supplied with the drinks. The popcorn was flavoured with sweet chilli and better than that in the bar at the Old Government House [OGH] (same group - Red Carnation - but twice the price) where we also went for a drink on two evenings, which was just plain. A nice thing about the Duke of Richmond is how helpful most of the staff are. Front of House are great and they'll print out your boarding pass for the return flight with no hassle, or book you a restaurant in the town. There's the odd grumpy face from one or two of the young ladies on the breakfast service but generally everyone is niceness itself. We didn't use the pool this time as the weather wasn't brilliant. It's a short walk down to the harbour though the Candie Gardens and past the OGH then down past some shops. Uphill, of course, back - but manageable; St Peter Port is just like that. This is definitely our hotel of choice now.

We moved here from the Old Government House Hotel and we have had an excellent stay. The room is large with a super king sized bed, sofa and three easy chairs. Wifi was fast, breakfast good and the afternoon tea fabulous. Five sandwiches, five cakes and two scones - thank heavens we just ordered ken to share. The decoration in the public rooms is slightly bizarre being a mix between South African big game hunting and New Romantics but this is a good hotel. The walk into town was good and the hotel very quiet.

I have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Duke of Richmond, with my mother and sister. The purpose of the trip was to celebrate my sisters 50th birthday. I cannot fault the service of the staff, who were extremely attentive, friendly and made a happy visit all the more memorable. We were given a complimentary bottle of champagne, along with a deluxe afternoon tea, and glasses of prosecco on our arrival....... all to celebrate our special trip. We had a junior suite, which was very comfortable, roomy, and light. I had a slight issue with my "put you up bed", but this was swiftly dealt with once I alerted housekeeping. The ambience of the hotel was incredible, and I really got the impression that all the staff enjoyed their jobs! A good location for walking into the harbour, only 10 mins through the beautiful Candie Gardens. Breakfast was delicious, and the portions were hugely generous. I highly recommend this hotel, and would not hesitate booking it again. Thank you DOR for a happy, fun trip.

We have just returned from spending a celebratory few days at this hotel. Our Silver wedding and a friends birthday.

This hotel boast efficient friendly staff with all the little extras you didn't even know you needed. If you didn't NEED them you certainly would appreciate them i.e. complimentary iced tea and sweetie jar selections, turndown service including little treats. Even provided suncream if you were languishing by the pool.

The hotel breakfast was second to none. I have a some food intolerances and the staff were able to cope with my needs beautifully.

The hotel is flamboyantly decorated which made us smile.

We loved this hotel and can't wait to return.

What a wonderful hotel the Duke of Richmond is. The ultra efficient, friendly welcoming staff in all areas, are just superb EVERYBODY is made to feel like you are the most importnt person in the hotel. Our room was absolutely spotless and very nice, good quality bedding , turn down service FOC if required. There are three glasses of free sweets (jelly beans! chocolate limes and humbugs) and cold tea in reception. Special mention to the restaurant staff especially Katherine who has got the lovliest Of smiles. It take 33 mins flying time from Gatwick 10 mins to the hotel from the Airport . The local island of Herm is stunning the Shell Beach is just like the Caribbean . you can get a boat from the harbour for £12.50 takes 20 mins and the Island of Sark is £29 and takes 40 mins. Both well worth a visit.

We did this a deal with Condor ferries and Travelsmith. Overall v good value for money. Quiet, well appointed (if a bit fussy) room, great bed and bathroom. Generous breakfasts - very helpful staff.
Parking not clever unless you are familiar with Guernsey parking schemes - only 5 hotel spaces so you might have a walk.

Stayed here with some friends for a weekend. The service was excellent and we felt like we had arrived in a luxury London hotel. The rooms were very well appointed and we loved the cocktails in the bar and food in the restaurant. We didn't get to use the pool or terrace as the weather wasn't terrific but we would certainly stay again. The barman George is worth a special mention, a real asset to this hotel.

returned to this hotel and once again was excellent. Amazing rooms, breakfast and bar area - all a little bit different. Bar fairly pricey though. Breakfast is a great selection and the cooked to order hot food is a great choice. The planning is great and they cater for your every need. Would recommend.

We booked this hotel for 5 nights through Expedia for our first visit to Guernsey. This trip was to celebrate our anniversary and my wife's birthday.
On our arrival, reception at the front desk was very good. While checking in we also booked for the dinner on that day to celebrate birthday. Receptionsist wished my wife happy birthday. When we arrived for dinner that night, I was disappointed that we were seated next to the kitchen door. Then Katharine, young trainee waitress, served us very well. Although she is doing her 3rd year of her training, she was absolutely professional with her Bermuda smile.
Room 311 was very well decorated and bathroom was spotlessly clean as one would expect in 4 star hotel. Kettle was hidden in ward robe, so was the safety locker.
Leopard restaurant serves a very high quality food. Staff is very professional and friendly. Katherine, Carina and Olga Abrue were brilliant. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast every day and three dinners. Very pleased.
Walking back to hotel from the town is uphill walk. However, if you plan, you can catch bus number 32, 41, 42, 51, 61, 71 or 81 from town terminus and get down at St Julian Avnue stop. By doing that you will reduce 60% of your uphill legwork. Even hotel receptionist will not tell you this. On the whole, a very memorable stay and would recommend highly.

A Red Carnation Hotel in recent years renovated to a good standard.Walking distance to Town. (10mins) opposite a park and next to Candie Gardens. Slightly restricted view of sea from terrace. Conservatory where afternoon tea can be taken leads directly on to terrace which is lovely on a warm day.

Afternoon tea is as expected, wide choice of loose leafed tea, finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with jam and clotted cream and a mouth watering array of pastries and cakes. Good value at £17.95 a head. What you can't eat can be boxed up and taken away!

If I had any criticisms they would be; a shortage of cutlery ( no cake forks so one had to use the teaspoon from teacup) we had to ask for napkins, I had to ask for a clean cup and the handle on the tea pot was cracked where it joined the pot. Service was also a little slow, it took over half an hour to serve us. It is a shame these things let the quality of the service down. Food was very good though, decor pleasant and staff very polite.

We went to this wonderful place last Sunday for a family lunch and had an excellent time. This was my first experience of a Red Carnation Hotel Restaurant and I was absolutely delighted by the whole experience. The service was outstanding throughout; the staff was welcoming, most friendly and obliging. We first had drinks on the beautiful terrace with view over the harbour and then moved to the amazing Leopard bar restaurant where lunch was served. The dishes were well presented and deliciously prepared. The wine selection to accompany the meal was superb. I am not from Guernsey and was thrilled to be invited by my son and family to such a special
venue.It was a real treat.

Our trip was only for one night to deliver a car, so we came over on an extremely early boat and arrived at the Duke of Richmond early the staff greeted us with big smiles offered us coffees and we actually had a superb breakfast and went afterwards to our room. The room was lovely very comfy bed all the items you might require and the bathroom was modern and spotless. The next morning we needed a cab back to the port which was proving difficult to get early on a Saturday, so without hesitation Lucas the hotel manager drove us down there himself!!! What excellent service, I would love to go back to guernsey for longer and would go back to the Duke of Richmond without hesitation and would certainly recommend to anyone. Thank you for a extremely pleasant stay.
