The Bass and Lobster

Such a shame. The setting was really pleasant and the staff very friendly and engaged. My starter was first class but the main course was dire. A stodgy mass of gnocchi smothered in cloying cheese and parsley source. I still felt queasy hours after the meal. Unfortunately this was a corporate event so I only had the one vegetarian option. I would have marked it lower but to be fair my omnivorous colleagues said their meals were good so it seemed unfair to dismiss the restaurant as "poor" on the basis of my experience alone. However I won't be going back. Yet another example of how difficult it can be to get good vegetarian food eating out in the Channel Islands.

Oh dear, I keep changing my mind about the Bass and Lobster. I think my problem is that it lacks consistency and I never know whether I am going to be pleased with the food or disappointed.
We went last night after a disappointing visit just after Christmas. On that occasion, much of the set menu involved deep fried food.Last night we had two courses for £19.50p off the set menu which isn't particularly cheap considering the other excellent restaurants in the vicinity for a similar price. The atmosphere on a Tuesday night was lacking with bright lights and only a few tables occupied in the large restaurant space. Service was friendly enough and efficient.
My starter was so unremarkable that I can't remember what was in it but it was some sort of tartlet, my wife went for the smoked salmon which was judged to be OK.I found it difficult to choose a main from the set menu so went for the good old beef burger which was fine, not the best I've had but not the worst either. My wife went for the cod and risotto and she left most of it.
I think I will give the restaurant a miss for the foreseeable future but I may be spoiled by the good Jersey food or just getting fussy as lots of reviewers seem to love the place. Until it gains consistency for me I will continue to think the Bass and Lobster is a place of contrasts.

Spent a lovely lunchtime here. the welcome was warm as was the seating arrangements, near the gas effect log fire which made it very toasty indeed. I had the set 2 course menus whilst my husband went Al a carte. The best steak he has eaten for a long time, and my burger and checked were delicious. The two staff members on duty worked exrtreamly hard, originally their had only two bookings but the place became exrtreamly busy with walk in's which we did. Will definitely return.

In good Jersey style we questioned whether anyone in the group was willing to drive out of Town to Gorey. Sad but true, especially at Christmas when everyone wants a drink. However the menu was enticing and the reputation is very good. So, with designated drivers agreed we decided to book.
I am not sure how much the owners would want this publicised but their response to the various allergies and likes was nothing short of outstanding....and I know how irritating that can be for the chef and staff when the restaurant is busy. I contacted the restaurant in advance and talked through the menu. Instead of one rather uninspiring choice that restaurants often offer there was great choice.
However, this was for us a small part of the experience. The atmosphere was perfect, no lift music versions of Christmas songs, and the staff very friendly. This, combined with superb food made for a great evening. Recommendations: The Chicken Pate, and Prawn Cocktail were great to start, and the Steak with Truffle Jus was perfectly balanced.
The Bass and Lobster works well for groups but I will probably just go back for a party of two.

The restaurant has a real buzz, the menu is varied and very good value. There could be a few more decorations as the fire place is the only Christmas feature besides a tree on the bar, but the meal made up for that as the service is good even when they see busy.

Had a lovely family Sunday lunch today
The special Xmas menu offers great choice and the kids menu provides good quality foodThe posh fish and chips is a big portion and very nicely presented and the cod in risotto is so very tasty
The wait in between courses was welcome and the staff were all friendly Can't wait to go back again soon
Highly recommend the Xmas menu

A party of twelve was clearly a little overwhelming, even though the restaurant was not busy. The food was excellent but, when the long wait for each course was commented upon, there was no apology just an announcement that there was another table of eight being served. Other staff were charming but did not seem experienced and our waiter was unfamiliar with the menu. There was no avocado in the prawn, smoked fish and avocado starter and there was a drink item on the bill that we had not ordered and the waiter did not know how to alter the bill. This experience was unfortunate as previous visits have been very relaxed and enjoyable.

Have dined here on several occasions and have been very impressed with the standard of food and service for the price. The set dinner is excellent value and portions are generous. Fresh food cooked to perfection, all in all deserves 5 stars easily.

We visited the Bass and Lobster at the start of Tennerfest and 2 of our group had the Tennerfest menu while 2 ordered from the à la carte. None of us were disappointed. The food was amazing, the service impeccable and although it's not the cheapest place to eat, it was good value for money. Would highly recommend.

Lovely setting, friendly and helpful staff. Food quality superb and quite a good choice. Music was a little too loud for us but not intrusive. Was fairly expensive at £40 per head for 2 courses but well worth it for the food quality. Recommended for that special occasion.

A birthday celebration for 25 people was no problem for this lovely restaurant. The staff were really accommodating, taking photos for us and even setting up a little table for the Birthday album to sit on for all the family to leave messages in.
We liaised with them prior to the event and they were happy to send sample menus etc for people to see and select from making organisation on the night run more smoothly. They really couldn't have been more helpful, coping with all the seat changing going on admirably well.Oh and the food was great too!!

We visited this restaurant a couple of years ago and enjoyed so much we rebooked for our return trip to jersey. My niece said it was the best fillet steak she had tasted. I had the scallops with risotto delicious. The service was excellent. The food was well presented and served hot. I will book again when next visiting Jersey

Popped down to the Bass and Lobster for lunch in picturesque Gorey. Hadn't been for a while. it was full inside (Thursday so a good sign) so sat outside which suited us as the sun was shining at times and it was warm. There was a set menu of 2 courses for £16-50 or 3 courses for £19-50. Small but excellent 4 or 5 course choice for starters and mains. We liked just about everything. In the end we went for Spanish Steak burger which was served with chorizo and crispy onions and fat chips. Superb and very filling. My wife had the fish platter which looked wonderful and tasted even better. Oysters, fresh local crab, smoked salmon, prawns, and salad. Nice glass of rose wine to wash it all down. It was lovely to sit outside and enjoy quality food.

Food was extremely good, though pricey for portion sizes, three of us had different choices but came to the same conclusion
The big let down was front of house staff, quite offhand and impatient, towards the end of my main course, my two friends having finished, the waitress had cleared their dishes, which in itself is quite rude while I was eating ... She then hovered around waiting for me to finish, even looking at her watch! She may have been on a promise, but it was only just after lunch and it meant no tip whatsoever from all three of us.Won't be back there any time soon.

Food seemed very fresh. The setting is simple but nicely done, service was cheerful and fine. The menu is quite short but eclectic. Seafood is a good choice and not super expensive. They did not have much for young children but we managed OK.

We used eat here every year when we came on holiday. We didn't bother last year as we thought it overpriced for the portion size & service was poor. We decided to give it another go this year & were pleasantly surprised; that said, we were told the chef was off sick & it was the 2nd in command in the kitchen. This time the portions were better sizes except the sea bass still small. Lovely desserts. Service much better this time too. Altogether we enjoyed this more than Mark Jordan on the Beach.

A. N Other meal at The Bass and Lobster. A. N. Other fab night out. Friendly efficient service. Perfectly cooked food. Tasting plate for starters (parfait, gaspachio, parma ham and fish), fish and chips for mains (salmon, king prawn, cod and scallop), tasting plate dessert (crème brulee, crème caramel, passion fruit sorbet, chocolate logs, summer fruits and choc mouse), and a bottle of wine (just for me!!). £45 including tip. Very full. Very happy. And we went a la carte - cheaper version for set menu available!

The food was lovely but overpriced with small portions.
We both chose from the specials board and the sea bass fillet was tasty but tiny, and the half a lobster was the smallest I have ever been served in a restaurant!
We wont be returning

Don't be put off by the lack of view, the Bass and Lobster is practically in Gorey and is my favourite restaurant in the area. The food is consistently superb with good friendly service, Yesterday i ate off the special menu and ate the best lobster dish ever, Asian inspired. Can't wait to go back.
