We visited the Cathedral on a bank holiday. The place was busy but not packed. Very nice welcoming staff at the entrance gave us a leaflet and explained where to go. We were impressed by the carvings and the nave. It looks like a Roman Cathedral from Central Italy (Orvieto if you've ever been). Really amazing glass windows at the end of the nave by the Virgin chapel. Beautiful representations of the life of Jesus. Really a must see place if you are in Lichfield visiting the town or enjoying a meal in one of the restaurants.

A beautiful cathedral to wander around, but the best views are on the outside, the carving is truly amazing and what a beautiful setting, an amazing tribute to the Medieval stonemasons :)

The decoration of this cathedral is simply divine, in terms of the stonemasonry, stained glass and paintings, which have changed on each visit. Would definitely recommend a visit to see the the Lichfield angel and relics from the hoard.

It seems a bit strange to be reviewing an active place of worship as a tourist attraction but here we go.

Lichfield cathedral is ancient place dedicated to an old Saxon saint. There is a chapel where his head was once held.

From ancient inscriptions to the standards of the fallen in wars of empire this place is full of the lives and history of Staffordshire.

Even if you aren't religious it is still very much worth a visit. Given them some money to stop it falling down, sandstone isn't the best for longevity!

Visited the Cathedral on a very wet and windy Palm Sunday for a lovely service and procession around the cathedral.
Would have like to spent more time!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Lichfield Cathedral. We began the visit from the outside admiring the West Front decorated with 19th century statues and enjoying the peaceful and beautifully kept square in which the cathedral is situated. Upon entering we received a warm and genuine welcome from a volunteer and a free tri-fold leaflet filled with beautifully presented and interesting information about the main parts of the building: the Nave, Chapter House, Lady Chapel and Quire. We enjoyed referring to this as we explored the cathedral. Highlights of the visit for us included the display of the St Chad Gospels, the Mediaeval Wall Painting in the Chapter House and the Selwyn Memorial in the Lady Chapel. Passionate and dedicated volunteers who clearly love and cherish the cathedral were on hand to answer our questions and we enjoyed talking to them about the various architectural assets of the building and stories associated with the extensive restoration work that took place after damages caused by the Civil War. After exploring the cathedral we visited the Cathedral Shop situated opposite the front of the cathedral where once again we received a warm welcome and were impressed with the extensive collection of books available including historical and theological texts. Overall Lichfield Cathedral has a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere which is both calming and inspiring. We will definitely visit Lichfield Cathedral again and want to thank the volunteers who helped make our visit so special.

Make sure you have a look from the front of this magnificent building and you will see the three Spires. THe inside of this Cathedral is jaw dropping. I liked all the little nook and crannies.. THe two young sisters, sleeping children.. THe lichfield angel. A few peices of the Staffordshire hoard. LOts of volunteers on hand to help with the history of the building. And last but not least the beautiful stained glass windows. Well worth a visit.

Lichfield Cathedral is usually not thought of as one the great English Cathedrals such as York, Canterbury, Salisbury and Ely for example but should be. It is a spectacular edifice overloaded with history and historical and architectural detail. Inside there is much to take in and see incuding the Chapter House with a small allocation of the local Hammerwich Saxon Staffordshire Hoard. It is also worth a walk around the outside of the Cathedral to see the incredible stonework and things such as damage from the English Civil War and a statue to Charles II who granted funds to repair the civil war damage. A slightly wider walk around the Cathedral takes you round the Cathedral Close which is composed of many historic buildings. If you visit late afternoon someone may be playing the organ in the cathedral which is a very atmospheric experience. Well worth visiting and re-visiting.

We didn't know very much about Lichfield and actually stopped there en route to Bath for a coffee. Having explored the city, we shall definitely return to explore further. We learnt a huge amount about the history of the ancient Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and were impressed by the architecture and treasures of the cathedral. The city itself is a real gem - I don't think I've every met so many friendly people in one place.

Lichfield Cathedral is special as this is to be the oldest one in England. Lichfield is a small town but quite spectacular with the two towers rising above the city. It’s definitely worth visiting. Also pass by the park on the other side of the road as you will find a statue of Edward John Smith, captain of the Titanic. He was born in Stoke-On-Trent but had to do something with Lichfield as well.

Joining a church full of past and present scholars, and their families, to celebrate 140 years of our school, it was wonderful to be back in this dramatic, ancient cathedral. The soaring arches & magnificent stained glass windows lent themselves to the occasion, with so many voices singing well known and much loved hymns.
Wandering around beforehand, I was reminded, by the architecture, just how old this lovely cathedral is. After the service, my sisters and I posed for photos outside to show to our elderly disabled father who was unable to make the journey from Edinburgh but without whom we would never have come to love this very special place.
No visit to Lichfield Cathedral would be complete without a visit to the Cathedral Shop, opposite the main entrance, where you can choose from lots of original and locally crafted mementos.

Nice mosaics and stained glass windows. Unable to take photos unless you pay the camera charge of three pounds on way in so I did not bother. Interesting interactive games for adults and children like brass rubbings and plenty of info on cathedral to read as you walk around.

Well worth a visit. This cathedral, with its three spires is unique. A visit to Lichfield is not complete if you do not include the cathedral, it is only just outside the city centre, the spires are visible from miles away. Stop and admire the architecture.

This Cathedral is one of my favorites, it has such character, the tower opens at certain times of the year for the more energetic. There is always something going on and there is a great little shop opposite. Begin so close to Lichfield there are plenty of cafe;s bars and restaurants as well as stunning architecture.

A Wonderful medieval cathedral with three spires & a variety of stone masonry & carvings. It's undergone restoration after being heavily damaged in the Civil War & by the Victorians with great examples of higherVictorian art. It has a recently restored & stunning set of Flemsh medieval stained glass windows that were installed early in the nineteenth century. The cathedral also houses fine examples of exquisite gold worked items from a nearby archeological find, & a rare & beautiful carved stone angel from the eighth century. Set in a lovely quiet close of beautiful buildings it's a rewarding place to visit.

A wonderful cathedral, despite it's rather forbidding exterior, we were given an excellent guided tour of the treasures in the chapter house by one of the volunteers, he was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining.
