Very pleased to see our 8 year old grandson find plenty interest and occupy him here. The individual audio devices were a great success.

Pevensey Castle is the ruin of a fortification that goes back all the way to the Roman invasion of England, with additions/modifications made from William the Conqueror to WWII. It must have been a very impressive sight back then, and there's enough of that left to justify a trip to Pevensey Bay. If you visit by train, be aware that connections along the Hastings to Brighton line are few and far between on the day, with two connections in either direction in the morning, and two in the middle of the afternoon. So plan your visit carefully. The castle is now being maintained by National Trust, the ticket will cost you UKP 6.90 for an adult (concessions available). Expect to spend 1-2 hours on the premises. You can walk the grounds of the castle for free, only the access to the "inside" is charged. As to be expected, no real "rooms" of the castle proper still exist, but you'll get access to a couple of towers (since those were restored for use in WW2). There's a small exhibition on the history of the castle, which is rather nice. Would have been even nicer had I not had the misfortune of a teenage student group visiting the castle at the same time. Ugh, teenagers. Double ugh, British teenagers. Anyway, I certainly enjoyed the trip own history lane, the clerk at the entrance was very helpful too - plus an audio guide is included with the ticket. Which proved to be very informative, even if the narration at certain points of interest went on and on and on. ;) I finished within one hour, which was the same time spent on the premises by those teenagers. All in all, if you happen to be in Eastbourne or Hastings, it's totally worth the trip. And if you're caught in Pevensey for some hours more, as I was, make sure to walk up to the beautiful seafront, enjoy Fish and Chips from Rosie's Fish Bar, and just unwind.

Lovely area for a walk but we didn't go "inside" the castle .....its looked after by English heritage and we're always surprised at the fees they charge!

I was amazed at the area this castle covers. It was a glorious day and so ate sandwiches on a bench within the castle.

Visited yesterday as part of our mini break down to Hastings. We live close by to Dover Castle which is a favourite of ours so it was nice to visit a different castle for a change. We loved it - there's a large area for kids to burn off their energy (which anyone with kids can testify is a good thing!). All of the ruins were so interesting and the kids really loved it. The castle is stunning to look at from the outside.
We didn't do a guide or anything as prefer to amble around at our own pace. We stayed for about 1.5 hours but could have easily stayed for double this time just exploring the different crooks and crannies and the large area around the castle itself.
Would definitively like to return for a longer visit. Have English Heritage passes which makes this a 'free' day out so really good value.

There's a lot to see in this castle ruins, not a surprise given that the site dates from Roman times and saw service up to WWII. The entry seems good value for those that are not members and the audio guide aided the experience on our trip.

Could do with a few more paths inside as grass can get so wet in the rain.

Wow what a place! So much history in one location dating from roman times to the 2nd world war. We knew nothing of Pevensey castle before we arrived, but we were so pleased we went. The lady at the reception was really pleasant & very helpful. She gave our kids an activity pack for them to do on site which they throughly enjoyed. There are two exhibitions, one about the Norman's & the castle though from medieval times to modern day & one about the castles role during the war. We would definitely recommend going to Pevensey castle if you're in the area, as it has a very unique history.

Nice find and very nice staff, the staff member found us somewhere to place our bicycles while we looked around the castle, interesting finding it was used more recently as a strategic part of the war.

Very interesting place to visit, a castle within a castle! History explained as you go round by audio and written boards. You probably need a leisurely couple of hours to absorb the facts.
No facilities on site, these are provided outside.
